When we first had our home built, we had an idea of a minimal and contemporary kitchen. First thing, we had to decide on a color palette–so we went with a black and white theme. What’s more modern and minimal than plain black and white? It also paired very well with the brushed nickel appliances and fixtures—making it blend well. The black granite countertop against the white cabinets really made the modern kitchen look very tidy. We opted not to put knobs on our cabinets for a more streamline look.
Here are some tips to make your small kitchen more spacious and contemporary.
1. Don’t Be Too Eclectic
Modern is simple and minimal. Although I love the Pioneer Woman brand because their kitchenware is great for gifting, we are not a big fan of eclectic colors and designs because it makes the kitchen look cluttered. We try to stay within the color palette of our kitchen. Plates and glasses are all the same and black gun metal utensils to stay within our color theme.
2. Brushed Nickel
Nothing screams modern and contemporary than brushed nickel. It has that industrial look and it looks clean.
3. No Weird Shapes, Linear Shapes are ideal
We try to stay away from anything that has a weirdly shaped design. We like a streamline look to keep everything modern, so most of our kitchen items have a basic linear shape with no weird angles. We love our door handles from Lowe’s because of its linear design. Round door handles appear dated and too ornate.
4. Less is More
When I think of modern and contemporary, I think of spacious and neat. First of, our kitchen isn’t very large, so we try to keep things to a minimal to make our kitchen appear bigger. Also, just because there is space for items, that doesn’t mean you should fill every nook in your kitchen. We try to keep our appliaces against the wall. If there is no more “wall space,” then that’s it. We don’t try to place things infront of eachother. It doesn’t make sense to do it that way—no easy access, and you wont be able to see what you’ve got back there.
We did most of our shopping at Target. Their Project62 and Threshold brand fit our style because they had a very minimal design, but it also had a touch of rustic. Their color palatte was also monochromatic which matched our home nicely.
Below are items in our kitchen that may help bring a touch of modern to your cooking space. You can also visit HERE for a quick tour of my home.
GET THE BLACK & WHITE AESTHETIC
My home has actual granite counter tops and actual tile backsplash, but I’ve listed a similar-looking black granite contact paper and white backsplash peel and stick to achieve the black and white contrast. Shop below…
**IMPORTANT: Door handle has different configurations. This configuration is good for closets and pantries where a lock function is not needed. If you want the same style handles, but for bedrooms/bathrooms instead, click HERE
