When the Great Pandemic of 2020 arrived and ultimately shutdown the entire world, travel enthusiasts faced a harsh reality: where do I go from here?
I had plans to go across the world to swim in clear blue water and bathe in the mud with the elephants this year. That, of course, did not happen. Along with that, I was temporarily laid off, from what it appeared to be indefinitely. So, no work, no travel, and worldwide shutdown—sounds boring.
I needed a change of scenery, so where did I go? My backyard. My back patio was bare with an old couch and outdoor chairs stacked to the side with wasp nests. I’d step out every quarantine morning to have my cup of coffee. I started my day with the cool morning breeze and chirping birds, but as great as that may sound every morning, being greeted by wasps and a dirty couch is not the vibe I was going for.
My patio was covered and elevated with railings, so it had a great foundation to start with. It had potential. I did not need a gazebo or pergola, so that was already great, budget-wise. All I needed to do was to furnish.
Essentials To A Small Backyard Resort
Of course, depending on the vibe you want, furniture plays a huge part. I was going for a more “jungle” atmosphere, you know, because I missed my playtime with the elephants this year. Wicker and rattan furniture transforms your patio into the tropics and still giving that cozy rustic feel.
Throw pillows are great on the couch, but floor pillows are even better. Large, giant floor pillows and poufs are a great decorative piece, but at the same time utilizes the floor as extra seating space in an already small space.
Plants, a lot of plants. A jungle is not a jungle without any greenery.
Outdoor carpet/rugs adds a level of coziness. Jute rugs or rattan rugs in particular adds to the jungle vibe.
Sheer curtains or mosquito curtains gives a little privacy. Curtains also helps deflect bugs. Along with its practicality, its flowy texture elevates the “jungle-look” to a getaway resort.
Patio string lights make your backyard patio at night stand out beautifully.
Lanterns – romanticize the evening with lighted lanterns
Table Top Accents – decorating the outdoor table adds to the cozy feeling of relaxing in your living room.
Wooden Trays – Just as it’s a great accessory in a living room sectional, it’s also a great accessory piece for your outdoor oasis and at the same time use it as a tray while enjoying a meal outside.
